When it comes to Panerai watches, there are a few distinct features that might create the enthusiasm of Paneristi (Panerai collectors): an iconic dial is a first one. A limited edition is something desirable too. For Watches & Wonders 2015, both qualities are reunited in 2 new timepieces, with a limited production of 300 pieces each. Here are the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC PAM00617 and PAM00629, with their DLC coated titanium case, superb and iconic dials and a cool overall look.

Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC PAM00617 - PAM00629

Both watches, ref. PAM00617 and PAM00629, are based on the same case and design. Their are only differentiating from their dials (and a minor change on the movement). These new limited editions are using the Luminor 1950 case, meaning the vintage inspired shape that refers to the very first watches created by the Officine to feature the patented crown protection device. There’s just a slight difference between the normal Luminor case and the 1950 one – the latter is 100% faithful to the military watches from the 1950s while the normal Luminor is slightly redesigned with more modern curves. Even if based on the vintage shape, these two Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC are using modern techniques, as the 47mm case is made of lightweight and resistant titanium, with an even more technical black DLC coating. Both are featuring a domed sapphire crystal, reminiscent of the Plexiglas crystals used in vintage editions.

The first one, the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC ref. PAM00629, features the legendary California dial (with Roman numeral on the upper half of the dial, Arabic numerals on the bottom half, batons for the quarters and a triangle at 12). This type of dial is now iconic for Panerai and finds it roots in antique military watches (as born in 1936 on the Panerai Radiomir). The hands are made of gold (only hours and minutes are displayed – no second indicator) and the indexes are painted on the dial (that doesn’t come with the sandwich construction).

The other edition, the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC PAM00617, comes with a more classical dial, with a two-layer construction (so-called sandwich construction), with a black plate on the top with holes for the numerals and the indexes, and a second plate below that is coated with Super-Lunimova. This edition sports the OP logo at 6, comes with classical black hands (with luminous paint) and features a small second indicator at 9 (which is small and then doesn’t step on the 9 index).

Both editions of the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC feature the Calibre P.3000, an in-house, manually-wound movement, with a 3-day power reserve. It features a quick-hour adjustment, as the hour hand can be moved both forward and backward in one hour increments, in order not to disturb the precision of the watch. Both are featuring an aged brown leather strap with ecru stitching. The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC PAM00617 and PAM00629 are limited to 300 pieces each, and priced at 11,400 Euros.
