Vacheron Constantin has a long history with world time. The tricky complication is sewn into the very DNA of the Geneva-based manufacture. Even during the early days of the brand, founder Jean-Marc Vacheron and his successors traversed the world and brought pieces to markets on the periphery of the Swiss watch industry. Thinking globally has remained an important virtue for Vacheron Constantin.
Now, for this year’s Watches and Wonders, Vacheron Constantin is launching two new models of the Traditionnelle World Time in both 18k white and 18k 5N pink gold sublimated by a gold map in the center of the dial.
The Maison introduced their first timepieces endowed with an international time mechanism in 1932. That mechanical movement, created by Louis Cottier, indicated 24 time zones and allowed wearers to read-off the time in 31 cities across the globe. In the years since, the Maison released several wristwatches and table clocks that improved on the complication’s utility, adding even more time zones to their pieces.
The newest Traditionnelle World Time features a mechanical movement that tells time in 37 time zones, including partial time zones offset from the Universal Coordinated Time (UCT) by a half or a quarter hour. The new Calibre 2460 WT now displays the correct time for cities like Caracas in Venezuela (GMT – 4:30).
The display of the watch consists of three dials: a sapphire dial with a day-night shading and the engraved and inked 24-hour indications: a metal dial with painted cities names and and a “Lambert Projector” type gold map : and a metal external ring with a painted minute-track and applied gold hour-markers.
The calibre allows for the simultaneous read-off of the time in all regions of the world, along with a day and night indication located above the central world map. All indications can be simply adjusted from the crown, making a seemingly complicated movement as user-friendly as possible.
