Peter Speake-Marin is coming back to Harrods, and is there to stay. The English watchmaker, who launched his eponymous brand in Switzerland in 2002, inaugurated a dedicated window in the Fine Watch Room that will display part of his collection, including the Velsheda and the Wing Commander.
The partnership celebrates a happy reunion for both parties almost two years after Harrods first displayed Speake-Marin. The brand was then part of a special exhibition of indepedent watchmakers and enjoyed great success according to its founder. During an exclusive interview granted to Haute Time, Mr. Speake-Marin said the partnership was a no-brainer. “It was important for me to be in the United Kingdom, and Harrods was the best fit,” said Mr. Speake-Marin, who singled out the quality of the service and the watch knowledge of the men and women running the Fine Watch Room.
Now Harrods is showing its support for its compatriot by bringing Speake-Marin back, this time on his own. The English watchmaker has indeed been touted as one of Britain’s most talented watchmakers but the admiration has been mutual all along. Mr. Speake-Marin’s collection showcases Britain’s best, paying homage to its nautical and aviation history through the J Class and Wing Commander collections respectively.
The Speake-Marin display also showcases the brand’s new ambassador, British actor Pierce Brosnan, who Mr. Speake-Marin met after serving as a character study for his next role. Indeed, Mr. Brosnan will play a watchmaker in the upcoming Hollywood thriller ‘Survivor,’ which hits theaters on May, 29. You can watch the trailer here.
Mr. Speake-Marin is a well-known figure of Mayfair, having started his career in the restoration department of Somlo Antiques. A member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Independants (AHCI), he began wokring as a consultant before launching his own brand in 2002.
